Metković is a well known agricultural centre of a wealth that only the mighty River Neretva can provide. The region is renowned for its cultural heritage – here the ruins of the antique Narona can be visited – and in recent times as a border transit area. Metković itself boasts an ornithological museum displaying over 250 examples of the various bird species found in the surrounding district of Lower Neretva. The marshlands of Hutovo Blato, where fish and game abound, offer excellent all year hunting – this being reflected on the menus of the many local restaurants - and in winter many varieties of migrant birds, especially wild goose, may be observed.
In recent times Metković has become a stopping place for pilgrims on their way to Međugorje.
